There are plenty of Custom Android ROMs for the Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade. Android 2.1 is currently the version of Android shipped with the Orange San Francisco. In order to get Android 2.2, you need to install a custom ROM. Custom ROMs aim to make a clean, fast version of Android - in other words, 100% Google Android without the 3rd party apps and network branding.

Here are the differences between Stock, Debranded and Custom ROMs.

  • Stock ROM - A ROM shipped with the phone straight from the factory.  You can reinstall a stock ROM at any time in case you want to factory reset your phone.

  • Debranded ROM – A ROM identical to a stock ROM but with all network branding and 3rd party apps removed.  Default Google apps will replace any network/3rd party apps.

  • Custom ROM – A ROM based on the Android Open Source Code.  Custom ROMs are currently the only way to get Android 2.2 on your Orange San Francisco. The aim of a custom ROM is to make a fast, stable clean ROM that is 100% Google Android without the bloatware and network branding.

IMPORTANT, READ! There are two versions of the Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade – one with an OLED screen (the older production models) and the other with a TFT screen (the newer production models). Some ROMs will not work with the TFT version and vice versa. The list of ROMs in Step 2 clearly state their compatibility.
