In this step, you will learn how to root and install ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone. ClockworkMod Recovery is a custom recovery which will allow you to install custom ROMs, backup your phone and includes a whole ton of other features. Instructions for Gen 1 phones are at the top, and instructions for Gen 2 phones are further down.

You must read the previous page in order to identify whether you have a Gen 1 or Gen 2 phone.

Gen 1 - Root and install ClockworkMod Recovery


  1. These instructions are for Gen 1 phones. If you have a Gen 2 phone, go down for the Gen 2 instructions. If you are unsure which phone you have, see the previous page on Gen 1 or Gen 2.
  2. Open the Browser from the app list on your phone.
  3. Visit tinyurl.com/esfile
  4. Install ES File Explorer
  5. Open the Browser from the app list on your phone.
  6. Visit tinyurl.com/clockmd5
  7. Install ManD5
  8. Open the Browser from the app list on your phone.
  9. Visit tinyurl.com/gen2convert
  10. A file named gen1-to-gen2.zip (16.3MB) will begin to download. Pull down the notification bar to check the progress.
  11. Wait for the download to complete.
  12. Open ManD5 from the app list on your phone.
  13. Tap Select a file.
  14. Tap /download (you may need to scroll to find it).
  15. Tap /gen1-to-gen2.zip
  16. Tap OK.
  17. A MD5 hash will be generated. Check the md5 hash is ae0207cd88429a062d8b1770b3acd2c4. If not, the file did not download correctly. Delete all previous files you download using ES File Explorer and follow from Step 8 again.

  19. Open ES File Explorer from the app list on your phone.
  20. Tap download (you may need to scroll to find it).
  21. Tap AND hold (long press) on gen1-to-gen2.zip
  22. Tap Extract to.
  23. Tap Choose path.
  24. Enter /sdcard/ into the box.
  25. ES File Explorer
    Enter /sdcard/ into the ES File Explorer box.
  26. Tap OK and wait for the extraction to complete. This will create a folder named image on your SD card.
  27. Turn off your phone and remove the battery.
  28. Wait 5 seconds, and then reinsert the battery.
  29. Hold the front MENU and side volume+ button together - continue holding the two keys whilst you turn on your phone with the Power On button (so you should be holding 3 buttons at once).
  30. Once you see some green text on your phone, you may let go of all the buttons. Your phone is now being converted from Gen 1 to Gen 2. Once complete, your phone will automatically reboot and launch into ClockworkMod Recovery. Continue straight to the next page in order to choose and install a ROM.


Gen 2 - Root and install ClockworkMod Recovery


  1. These instructions are for Gen 2 phones. If you have a Gen 1 phone, go up for the Gen 1 instructions. If you are unsure which phone you have, see the previous page on Gen 1 or Gen 2.
  2. Open Settings from the app list on your phone.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Make sure Unknown sources is ticked.
  5. Tap Development.
  6. Make sure USB debugging is ticked.
  7. Open the Browser from the app list on your phone.
  8. Visit tinyurl.com/root2orange and click Download
  9. A small file named u_Root.apk will being to download and will take no more than a few seconds to complete.
  10. Pull down the notification bar from the top of the screen. Once the download completes, tap u_Root.apk.

    Press and hold the notification bar and drag down to view.
  12. Tap Install.
  13. Tap Open.
  14. Tap Permanent root.
  15. Wait until the app closes. This may take up to 10 minutes. Your phone might reboot (turn on and off).
  16. Open Settings from the app list on your phone.
  17. Tap Applications.
  18. Tap Development.
  19. Untick USB debugging.
  20. Open the Browser from the app list on your phone.
  21. Visit tinyurl.com/esfile
  22. Install ES File Explorer
  23. Open the Browser from the app list on your phone.
  24. Visit tinyurl.com/clockmd5
  25. Install ManD5
  26. Open the Browser from the app list on your phone.
  27. Visit tinyurl.com/packorange
  28. A file named latestgen2.zip (3.85MB) will begin to download and should take no more than a minute to complete. Pull down the notification bar from the top of the screen to check the progress.
  29. Troubleshooting

    If you get the error message...

    "<Untitled> Download unsuccessful"

    or

    "Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone"

    ...you probably haven’t installed ES File Explorer. If you have installed it, try uninstalling and reinstalling – tinyurl.com/esfile

    If you still receive the error message, turn off your phone and then turn it on again.

  30. Open ES File Explorer from the app list.
  31. Tap download (you may need to scroll to find it).
  32. Tap AND hold (long press) on latestgen2.zip
  33. Tap Extract to.
  34. Tap Current path.
  35. Tap OK.
  36. Open ManD5 from the app list on your phone.
  37. Tap Select a file.
  38. Tap /download (you may need to scroll to find it).
  39. Tap /clock.img
  40. Tap OK.
  41. A MD5 hash will be generated. Check the md5 hash is 50114ef3f89cd8d63c39b81951a06e7a. If not, the file did not download correctly. Delete all previous files you download using ES File Explorer and follow from Step 24 again.

  42. Open Settings from the app list on the phone.
  43. Tap Applications.
  44. Make sure the box is ticked next to “Unknown sources – Allow installation of non-Market applications”.
  45. Open the Browser from the app list on your phone.
  46. Visit tinyurl.com/recoveryorange
  47. A small file named recoveryM.apk will being to download and will take no more than a few seconds to complete.
  48. Pull down the notification bar from the top of the screen. Once the download completes, tap recoveryM.apk.

  49. Tap Install.
  50. Tap Open.
  51. Troubleshooting

    If you get the following error message…

    "The application Recovery Manager (process com.podtwo.RecoveryManager) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

    …check you have followed all the instructions correctly.

    If you are sure you have followed the instructions correctly, open the app list on your phone, go to Settings -> Manage Applications -> Recovery Manager -> Clear data -> OK. Now turn off your phone and turn it on again. Launch Recovery Manager from the app list on your phone. and follow from Step 48.

  52. Superuser will ask for permission. Tap OK.
  53. Tap the Recovery tab.
  54. Tap Install Recovery.
  55. Tap /sdcard/download/clock.img
  56. Tap OK.
  57. Wait for the Installing box to disappear.
  58. Tap Reboot into Recovery.
  59. Tap OK.
  60. You should now be in ClockworkMod Recovery. Continue straight to the next page in order to choose and install a ROM.
